Diesel spill spotted in Nile

A diesel spill spotted in the Nile has been controlled by an environment committee; boats nearby are being checked to identify the source of the leakage, Youm7 reported Sunday.

A thin layered spill was found in the river across from Kasr el-Einy Hospital; it measures 500 meters of length and 30 meters of width.

Water samples will be tested to make sure the water is potable and was not affected by the leak, head of Central Administration for Environmental Crisis Kawthar Hanafy told Youm7.

Cairo Company for Drinking Water and Sewage has assigned an observer at station intakes from the Nile, according to the spokesperson for the company Mohy el-Serafy.

Environment and Water bodies have previously dealt with similar incidents of oil leaks. In August, some 13 drinking water stations in Upper Egypt’s governorates of Asyut and Minya were briefly closed after diesel spill caused by a dilapidated steam power plant.
