Egyptian parliamentarian hit with shoe for meeting Israeli ambassador

Egyptian parliamentarian Kamal Ahmed threw his shoe at his colleague Tawfiq Okasha for the latter’s Feb. 25 meeting with Israeli ambassador to Cairo Haim Koren, Youm7 reported.

When Okasha entered the House of Representatives hall, Ahmed hit him on head, and Parliament Speaker Ali abdel-Aal ejected the two from the Sunday session.

Before the incidentm Abdel-Aal had referred Okasha Sunday to the Parliament’s investigation committee over his three-hour meeting with Koren, with whom he talked about “continued cooperation” and Israeli relations with Arab countries and the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD,) according to the Facebook page of the Israeli embassy in Egypt.

Although Egypt has maintained diplomatic and trade relations with Israel since 1980, any contact between civilians and Israelis is viewed as suspect. In 2014 a delegation of journalists who travelled to occupied Palestinian Territories faced expulsion from their syndicate, accused of “normalizing” relations with Israel, since they would have had to pass through Israeli borders.
