31 migrants, mostly Egyptian, arrive in Alexandria after rescue

A total of 31 migrants, mostly Egyptian, arrived in a navy vessel in Alexandria Monday, as well as nine decomposed bodies, Youm7 reported.

The migrants include 26 Egyptians, two Sudanese, two Eritreans and one Ethiopian. One body was identified to be an Egyptian woman and the rest of the corpses are still being identified. They are thought to be African migrants.

Officials from the Homeland Security, the General Security Authority, Alexandria governorate, Health Affairs Directorate and ambulances received the migrants at Ras el-Teen naval base.

On June 3 a boat carrying 600 migrants sunk in the Mediterranean 420 kilometers northwest of Alexandria and 160 kilometers south of Greece, according to Youm7.

Egyptian and Greek forces participated in the rescue effort, which saved at least 340 migrants, according to the Greek Reporter website.

From May 19-31, 163 people were arrested in illegal immigration attempts in Egypt’s north coast, where migrants try to board boats to Europe, according to a Sunday statement by military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.
