Egypt condemns Turkey's deadly car bombing

Egypt has condemned a car bomb that ripped through a military outpost in southeast Turkey on Sunday, killing 17 people.

The foreign ministry reiterated in a statement on Monday "Egypt's firm position condemning the phenomenon of terrorism."

It emphasized that the "Egyptian people stand by the Turkish people in their fight against terrorism."

Those killed in Sunday's blast included nine soldiers and eight civilians. The explosion also injured 27 people.

Relationships between Egypt and Turkey have been strained since Ankara emerged as one of the most vocal opponents of the Egyptian authorities following the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi—a close ally of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
