Egypt court upholds prison sentence and fines for seven in islands protest case

A Giza criminal court upheld a 5-year prison sentence and fines of EGP 100,000 each for seven people convicted in absentia of illegal protesting on 25 April against the Egyptian-Saudi maritime border demarcation agreement which transferred sovereignty over two Red Sea islands to Riyadh.

The defendants' lawyer Tarek Al-Awady said on his official Twitter account that he would appeal the court's ruling.

In May, an appeal court overturned five-year jail sentences for a group of 47 people who were among dozens arrested during demonstrations against the islands accord, but upheld EGP 100,000 fines against the defendants.
