Court to examine Morsi’s appeal against life sentence

Egypt’s Court of Cassation on Tuesday will begin examining an appeal presented by former president Mohamed Morsi against life imprisonment they had been handed on charges of espionage and collaboration with foreign organizations to plan attacks in Egypt, Youm7 reported.

In May, Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Morsi and other 15 Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including the group’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, to life on charges of aiding a terrorist campaign involving Hamas and the militant Lebanese Hezbollah movement, to commit terrorist attacks in the country.

The court also sentenced other 16 defendants to death over the said charges.

Cassation Prosecution recommended on Tuesday that an appeal be accepted, Youm7 reported. However, recommendations issued by the Cassation Prosecution are not binding to the Court of Cassation.

On Saturday, the Court of Cassation has upheld a 20 year jail sentence passed against Morsi for his role in the killing of protesters outside the presidential palace in Cairo in December 2012.

Saturday’s ruling is the first final verdict against Morsi, who has been convicted and sentenced to death and life imprisonment in three separate cases, but these rulings are under appeal.
