Court upholds prosecutor’s decision to seize assets of 27 people involved in wheat fraud

The Cairo Criminal Court on Sunday upheld a decision issued by Attorney General Nabil Sadek against 26 people involved in local wheat procurement corruption, Youm7 reported.

In August, Sadek ordered travel bans and asset freeze on 27 people, their spouses, sons and daughters over accusations of facilitating seizure of public funds, illicit profiteering and forgery. Most of the defendants are private silos owners.

They are suspected of claiming higher quantities of wheat than they are actually storing in order to boost government payments on highly subsidized local wheat.

In June, the parliament has formed a fact finding committee to probe into the case after an unusually high procurement figure prompted widespread fraud allegations from senior industry officials, traders and lawmakers.
