First Egyptian woman to work in theatre costume and scenic design dies at 85

The first Egyptian woman to work in costume and scenic design for theatre, Sakina Mohamed Ali, died Tuesday at the age of 85.

Many of Egypt s theatre experts and presidents of various institutions and bodies expressed mourning at the passing of the scenography expert.

"Theatre creativity has lost a scenography genius," Egyptian Minister of Culture Enas Abdel-Dayem said, paying tribute to Ali as a female theatre pioneer.

Egypt s Artistic Theatre House confirmed that Ali was the first woman to work in theatre styling and stage design in the 1950s.

"With all sadness, we mourn the loss of the first woman to work in stage and costume design in the history of the Egyptian theatre," stated Artistic Theatre House president Ismail Mokhtar Tuesday.

Sakina Mohamed Ali, who was recognised by UNESCO as one of the four most important scenic designers of Brecht s work, participated in a series of famous and successful plays in Egypt, including Shahrazade, Ah ya Ghagar, and Sekket El-Salama.
