Mubarak has no regrets, no fortune, says lawyer

CAIRO: Hosni Mubarak’s fortune does not exceed $1 million and he has no money outside the country, said the ousted president’s lawyer Farid El-Deeb in an interview with CNN Sunday night.

El-Deeb also said that Mubarak is "very sad and sorry" that he is accused of ordering that live ammunition be fired on protesters, but he has no regrets.

He said that Mubarak is suffering from cardiac problems, a resurgence of colon cancer and that his psychological state is "bad."

Mubarak's personal wealth is only about LE 6 million — about $1 million — "which he saved from working for 62 years," he said. "He does not own anything else in Egypt or outside of Egypt. He does not own a single dollar abroad."

He said Mubarak is in grief because he didn't expect these accusations and that he needs help to use the toilet in his room at Sharm El-Sheikh Hospital where he is kept in custody.

"Mubarak talks very little and is keeping his feelings to himself; he doesn't watch TV or any media on doctors’ orders for fear over his psychological health," El-Deeb said.

The Prosecutor General referred Mubarak, his sons Gamal and Alaa and businessman Hussein Salem to the Cairo Criminal Court on charges of killing protestors, misuse of power, incurring damages on public funds and profiteering.

He was fined LE 200 million by the Administrative Court along with ex-Interior Minister Habib El-Adly (LE 300 million) and ex-Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif (LE 40 million) for cutting off mobile and internet services during protests in January.

Reports claiming that Mubarak fled the hospital were denied by hospital officials Saturday.

The Prosecutor General is set to receive Monday the report of the medical committee that examined Tora Prison hospital and will decide whether or not to transfer Mubarak to it.
