CAIRO - Egypt's Prosecutor Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud ordered an investigation into a report accusing former president Hosni Mubarak of ordering the killing of around 7,000 policemen who were staging protests in 1986.
"A lawyer has accused Mubarak of ordering the Army to shell two Central Security camps in Cairo in 1986, which led to the death of more than 7,000 [policemen]," a judicial source was quoted by the State-run newspaper Al-Ahram as saying.
Lawyer Shehata Mohamed Shehata, the head of the Arab Centre for Transparency and Fairness, had filed a report against Mubarak last week, urging a new probe into what were then dubbed by the media as the ‘Central Security Incidents’.
Mubarak and his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, are standing trial for graft and ordering the killing of peaceful protesters during a revolt which forced him to step down on February 11.
