Politician El-Ghazali Harb endorses Shafiq presidential bid

Well-known politician Osama El-Ghazali Harb has announced his support for Mubarak's ex-prime minister and presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq.

The co-founder of the Democratic Front Party affirmed that voting for Shafiq does not mean an end to the revolution. "On the contrary, it's a confirmation for the new democratic phase that Egypt is to embrace," he said.

He added: "Shafiq didn't come this far through authoritarian rule or a coup. He was brought by the votes of the people." said Harb in an opinion piece on Shafiq published in Al-Ahram daily newspaper.

Shafiq reached the run-off vote after finishing second behind the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi in the elections' first round. The run-off is slated for 16-17 June.

Revolutionaries, however, are protesting Shafiq's presidential bid, arguing in nationwide mass protests that he is ineligible to run, according to the Political Disenfranchisement Law that stipulates that those who worked in the Mubarak government in the last 10 years of the deposed president's tenure cannot take up high political office.

The Supreme Constitutional Court has yet to rule on the constitutionality of the Political Disenfranchisement Law.
