Brotherhood's Freedom & Justice Party elects new secretary-general

Hussein Ibrahim became the new secretary-general of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) in internal party elections held Thursday.

Ibrahim clinched victory with 39 votes against 21 for opponent Helmy El-Gazar.

Ibrahim had served as head of the FJP's bloc in the now-dissolved People's Assembly (the lower house of Egypt's parliament).

Following the dissolution of parliament last summer, the 53-year old – originally from Alexandria – was appointed party secretary for Alexandria.

Thursday also saw the FJP elect several new committee heads.
