Interpol refuses arrest warrant for Shafiq: Govt official

Interpol has refused to issue an international arrest warrant for Ahmed Shafiq, an aide to Egypt's interior minister has said.

General Ahmed Helmy told state news agency MENA on Wednesday that Interpol suspects the charges against Shafiq are politically motivated and therefore it won't issue the warrant.

Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, who lost narrowly to Mohamed Morsi in last year's presidential election, is accused along with his daughters of seizing land belonging to fish farms and illegally allocating it to the Pilots' Association for Land Development, which he headed at the time.

On 19 February, Egypt’s prosecutor-general ordered his office to request an arrest warrant for Shafiq from Interpol.

Shafiq claimed the move was linked to "the settling of political scores."

Following his presidential election defeat in June 2012, Shafiq and his family went to Abu Dhabi.
