EU's Ashton meets 'Rebel', Brotherhood representatives in Cairo

European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Affairs Catherine Ashton has met on Wednesday evening with representatives from Egypt's anti-Morsi petition drive 'Rebel' and representatives from the Muslim Brotherhood from which the now-deposed president hails.

The two meetings were held separately but at the same location at a hotel in the capital.

Former Prime Minister Hisham Qandil and Brotherhood leaders Mohamed Ali Bishr and Amr Darrag attended the meeting with Ashton.

The EU had reportedly attempted to broker a consensus deal between Egypt's rival political forces a few months ago, but the proposed measures were turned down by Morsi, according to Reuters.

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood had rejected the current government as "illegitimate" and said it will not take part in any negotiations until Morsi – who was removed in a popularly-backed military overthrow - is reinstated.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ashton held meetings government officials including Egypt's temporary President Adly Mansour, Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy
