Egypt's toppled Mubarak and sons to face corruption trial August

Cairo Appeal Court Wednesday set 19 August as the date for the trial of toppled president Hosni Mubarak and his sons on corruption charges in the so-called "presidential palaces" case.

In June, Mubarak and his two sons — Gamal and Alaa — were referred to criminal court on the same charges.

The three are charged with squandering LE1.1 billion worth of public monies and illicitly redirecting state funds allocated to the renovation of presidential palaces towards their own private residences in the period between 2002 and 2011.

Mubarak, who remains in custody, will face retrial 17 August for complicity in the killing of more than 800 protesters during the 2011 uprising that overthrew his decades-long rule.

The Mubarak sons have remained in detention despite court rulings ordering their release, since they face separate financial corruption charges.
