Beltagy and Hegazy’s trial date set

The Cairo Appeals Court set a trial date for Mohamed Al-Beltagy and Safwat Hegazy for 7 September on the charge of kidnapping police personnel, forcibly detaining them and torturing them in Rabaa Al-Adaweya.

The two high-ranking members of the Freedom and Justice Party will be tried in absentia, having remained at large after arrest warrants were issued in early July.

The Prosecutor General’s office of East Cairo presented evidence against the accused on the charges of kidnapping, alleging that the victims had been assigned to secure a protest of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Prosecutor General’s office issued separate arrest warrants for both Al-Beltagy and Hegazy, accusing them of links to organized crime as well of obstruction of police work.

According to state-run MENA, the trial will be held in the sixth circuit felony court in north Cairo.
