The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced a police officer to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a defendant in a police vehicle, Al-Ahram reported. The case dates back to June 2016, when the head of the investigations department of Zagazig police station received a complaint from a 37-year-old female defendant saying that she was harassed and raped by a police officer while being escorted to the prosecution’s office. Subsequent investigations confirmed the accusation and the officer was referred to the Criminal Court.

Egypt s new cabinet, sworn in by President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi on 14 June and led by Mustafa Madbouli, will submit a policy statement to parliament next week. Constitutional expert Salah Fawzi expects the policy statement to be delivered on 23 or 24 June. MPs will then vote on it in accordance with Article 146 of the constitution which states a newly appointed prime minister must deliver a policy statement before parliament that MPs then vote on within 30 days.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tariq al-Mulla said on Wednesday that the state’s subsidies for petroleum products will be completely suspended by 2019, as part of an economic reform plan conducted by the government. He added in a press conference at the headquarters of the Cabinet that the application of the fuel smart card system is also suspended, after numerous gaps were discovered in the plan.

UAE-based investment fund Mubadala has bought a 10 percent stake in Egypt s giant Mediterranean Zohr gas field from Italian oil and gas company Eni, prior to a $934m deal reached in March. The deal comes just a few months after the start of production at Zohr, a field that was discovered in August 2015 by Eni.

As thousands of students took their Thanaweya Amma Physics and History High School exams on Tuesday, parts of the exams leaked on social media. Ahmed Khairy, the official spokesman for the Education Ministry, said that the student who leaked parts of the questions for the Physics exam has been identified.

The Red Sea governorate has begun an unprecedented experiment in Egypt of using greywater to clean streets and irrigate gardens in Hurghada, in order to save up to 40% of water following shortages. Greywater is relatively clean waste water from baths, sinks, washing machines, and other kitchen appliances. “The idea started with the installation of independent greywater treatment units in houses, in order reuse water in gardening and street cleaning, and to be the first model of an idea that could be distributed to the rest of residential areas in Hurghada,” head of the drinking water company in the governorate Yehia Siddiq said on Monday.

The Egyptian authorities decided to go ahead with hikes to subsidised government-set fuel prices on Thursday, lifting gasoline and diesel prices by between 17-66% and raising the price of a litre of gasoline 92 to EGP 6.75, up from EGP 5. The price of gasoline 80 and diesel fuel both increased from EGP 3.65 to EGP 5.50. Moreover, the price of gasoline 95 increased from EGP 6.60 to EGP 7.75, marking 17% increase, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) cylinders increased by 66% to reach EGP 50, up from EGP 30.

A reliable source in the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) said that there is plan to raise the prices of mobile recharge cards after the recent increase of fuel and electricity prices, denying rumors that reported an increase in pre-paid recharge cards from Egyptian mobile carriers Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and WE. The source, who preferred anonymity, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the price increase process requires long procedures and an extensive study and cannot be carried out independently by mobile companies, as it requires approval by the NTRA.

Egypt swore in a new cabinet on Thursday, replacing key ministers including finance, defense and interior in a major reshuffle after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi won a second term in office. President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday called on Egyptians to endure a raft of tough economic reforms introduced by the government, speaking the same day the government increased electricity prices. "All challenges and difficulties can be easy if Egyptians endure the conditions the Egyptian state is passing through," El-Sisi was quoted as saying by state news agency MENA.

Egypt s Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker announced in a press conference on Tuesday new increases in electricity prices along seven tiers of consumption, at an overall average of 26%, for the fiscal year 2018/2019, which starts in July. The average increase in electric bills for households will be 29%. The increase in electric bills for factories will be 41.8%. During the conference, Shaker also presented on the size of the electric power generated by the power stations the government has built and upgraded in the last four years, as well as the government s plans in completing under-construction stations and the development of solar energy plants.

Egypt s education ministry said on Tuesday that the electronic bar code printed on each Thanaweya Amma exam booklet has helped identify the individual who leaked the English language exam on Tuesday, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported. The student used a smart phone to post the exam on social media one half-hour after the test began.

Egyptian authorities released 32 Ethiopian prisoners on Monday during the visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Cairo, Egyptian and Ethiopian news websites reported. The released prisoners reportedly left the country on Monday on the prime minister s plane as he departed to Addis Ababa.

Sources close to Egypt s newly appointed Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly told Al-Ahram Daily that the new PM has concluded most of his consultations and meetings with candidates for ministerial posts in the new cabinet, and has communicated with the ministers from former PM Sherif Ismail s cabinet who will continue to serve in their positions. Madbouly is expected to present the final list of ministers for approval by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Monday before the ministers take their constitutional oath ahead of Eid, the sources said.

The House of Representatives approved on Sunday a new draft law regulating press and media, and referred it over to the State Council. Before the final approval of the law, a number of MPs objected to distribution of the draft law s report prepared by the Information Committee immediately before the plenary session, which did not enable them to examine the report properly.

Egypt has expressed its complete support for Saudi Arabia against any attack that would undermine the peace and stability in the kingdom, after a missile that was fired across the border from Yemen into Saudi Arabia on Saturday killed three civilians in Gazan. Cairo expresses "support for the kingdom in the face of brutal terrorism," a statement by Egypt s foreign ministry said on Sunday.
