Egypt announced the end of its wheat harvest on Wednesday with a total of 3.15 million tonnes of the grain procured from local farmers, Supply Minister Ali Moselhy said in a statement, one of the lowest tallies in years for the world s largest importer. Egypt had said previously it was looking to purchase 3.5 to 4 million tonnes of local wheat, a critical staple it uses to supply a sprawling bread subsidy programme relied on by tens of millions of Egyptians.

Egypt s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is set to fly to Nouakchott on Wednesday to participate in the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union. In an official statement released on Tuesday, Egypt s foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said the Egyptian participation in the summit and its preparatory meetings comes as part of a constant Egyptian commitment to react to the continent s issues, especially as Egypt prepares to chair the top summit in January 2019.

France is one of the biggest foreign investors in Egypt, with investments worth over 4 billion euros, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported Egypt s investment minister as saying on Tuesday. There are more than 160 French companies working in Egypt with investments worth 4 billion euros, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr said at the inauguration of an economic forum on the future of economic relations between the two countries, held at the Arab World Institute in Paris.

The West Cairo prosecution on Monday issued an order that the head of the Hadayek al-Qubba’s police station be put into custody for four days, pending investigations over the death of a defendant who died in the station. According to Akhabr Al-Youm newspaper, the prosecution also ordered the arrests of four non-commissioned police officers involved in the death.

Egypt s Ministry of Education and Scientific Research and the UK s University of Liverpool agreed to develop a strategic partnership through joint research and innovation activities, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) according to an announcement by the UK embassy in Cairo on Monday. In an official press release, the UK Embassy said the MOU was signed following a meeting between Egypt s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel-Gaffer and a high level delegation led by 11 UK university representatives visiting between 24-27 June.

Egypt s Prosecutor General Nabil Sadiq issued an international order to Interpol to arrest three Libyan Islamic State (IS) terrorists accused of collaborating with an Egyptian suspect in gathering information, kidnapping Egyptians working in Libya and demanding a ransom. The Supreme State Security Prosecution had earlier launched investigations into security information that the suspect, Mohammed Ragab Abdel Wahid Hassan, was collaborating with the IS in Libya.

A nationwide state of emergency was extended for a further three months starting 14 July, following parliamentary approval on Sunday. The ongoing state of emergency was extended by a presidential decree issued by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi but was pending approval by parliament.

The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced a police officer to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a defendant in a police vehicle, Al-Ahram reported. The case dates back to June 2016, when the head of the investigations department of Zagazig police station received a complaint from a 37-year-old female defendant saying that she was harassed and raped by a police officer while being escorted to the prosecution’s office. Subsequent investigations confirmed the accusation and the officer was referred to the Criminal Court.

Egypt s new cabinet, sworn in by President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi on 14 June and led by Mustafa Madbouli, will submit a policy statement to parliament next week. Constitutional expert Salah Fawzi expects the policy statement to be delivered on 23 or 24 June. MPs will then vote on it in accordance with Article 146 of the constitution which states a newly appointed prime minister must deliver a policy statement before parliament that MPs then vote on within 30 days.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tariq al-Mulla said on Wednesday that the state’s subsidies for petroleum products will be completely suspended by 2019, as part of an economic reform plan conducted by the government. He added in a press conference at the headquarters of the Cabinet that the application of the fuel smart card system is also suspended, after numerous gaps were discovered in the plan.

UAE-based investment fund Mubadala has bought a 10 percent stake in Egypt s giant Mediterranean Zohr gas field from Italian oil and gas company Eni, prior to a $934m deal reached in March. The deal comes just a few months after the start of production at Zohr, a field that was discovered in August 2015 by Eni.

As thousands of students took their Thanaweya Amma Physics and History High School exams on Tuesday, parts of the exams leaked on social media. Ahmed Khairy, the official spokesman for the Education Ministry, said that the student who leaked parts of the questions for the Physics exam has been identified.

The Red Sea governorate has begun an unprecedented experiment in Egypt of using greywater to clean streets and irrigate gardens in Hurghada, in order to save up to 40% of water following shortages. Greywater is relatively clean waste water from baths, sinks, washing machines, and other kitchen appliances. “The idea started with the installation of independent greywater treatment units in houses, in order reuse water in gardening and street cleaning, and to be the first model of an idea that could be distributed to the rest of residential areas in Hurghada,” head of the drinking water company in the governorate Yehia Siddiq said on Monday.

The Egyptian authorities decided to go ahead with hikes to subsidised government-set fuel prices on Thursday, lifting gasoline and diesel prices by between 17-66% and raising the price of a litre of gasoline 92 to EGP 6.75, up from EGP 5. The price of gasoline 80 and diesel fuel both increased from EGP 3.65 to EGP 5.50. Moreover, the price of gasoline 95 increased from EGP 6.60 to EGP 7.75, marking 17% increase, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) cylinders increased by 66% to reach EGP 50, up from EGP 30.

A reliable source in the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) said that there is plan to raise the prices of mobile recharge cards after the recent increase of fuel and electricity prices, denying rumors that reported an increase in pre-paid recharge cards from Egyptian mobile carriers Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and WE. The source, who preferred anonymity, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the price increase process requires long procedures and an extensive study and cannot be carried out independently by mobile companies, as it requires approval by the NTRA.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi announced on Friday, which marked the first day of Eid Al-Fitr, that he has directed the interior minister to release all imprisoned indebted women after paying their debts through the Tahya Misr Fund, assuring the importance of spending the feast time with their families. Egypt swore in a new cabinet on Thursday, replacing key ministers including finance, defense and interior in a major reshuffle after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi won a second term in office. The new cabinet marks the broadest shake-up in Egypt’s government since Sisi first took office in 2014, as the Western- allied nation grapples with an Islamist insurgency and tries to put the economy back on track after years of turbulence since 2011 protests toppled veteran leader Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt s Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker said that the proposals for new electricity pricing were presented to the cabinet and approved on 30 May and adopted on 4 June. He added that the average economic cost of producing electricity is 104 piastres per kW.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday called on Egyptians to endure a raft of tough economic reforms introduced by the government, speaking the same day the government increased electricity prices. "All challenges and difficulties can be easy if Egyptians endure the conditions the Egyptian state is passing through," El-Sisi was quoted as saying by state news agency MENA.
