Egypt ruling NDP wins 80 Shura seats after run-offs

The Egyptian Higher Election Commission announced that Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) won 80 out of 88 seats contested in the Shura Council mid-term elections

On his part, a chairman of the Higher Election Commission Intisar Nessim said that "The NDP garnered 80 seats, including 14 ones uncontested, whereas four seats went to four opposition parties respectively -- al-Ghad, al-Geel, al-Tagammu and the Nasserist -- and four were won by independent candidates."

A second round of elections for 10 seats of the upper house of the Egyptian parliament took place Tuesday in five governorates. They were contested by 20 candidates, including 11 from the NDP.

Nessim said that the number of eligible voters in the run-off elections was 2.8 million, with a total of 392,556 voters casting their ballot, bringing the turnout rate to 14 percent.

Egyptians went to the polls on June 1 for the mid-term election of the Shura Council to pick one third of the political advisory body's members.

The first round was conducted in 55 constituencies to select 88 members, one third of the house's 264 seats.

Around 460 candidates ran in the elections.
