Egyptian hospitalised for alleged torture

MANSURA- An Egyptian man jumped off a police station in the Nile Delta town of Bani Ebeid to escape alleged torture.Mohamed Salah Mahmoud, a 18-year-old driver, is now lying in a hospital under security after surving the jump, said his family.

They claim he had been taken to the police station in Bani Ebeid, some 110km north of Cairo, after refusing to allow two detectives to get a free ride.

Egyptian police have recently been under fire from local and international human rights after two policemen had purportedly beaten a young activist to death in the coastal city of Alexandria.

On Saturday, Egypt's Chief Prosecutor ordered the two policemen to stand trial for illegally arresting and using harsh treatment to the 28-year-old activist.
