CAIRO- The trial of an Egyptian journalist, accused of inciting the public against a new tax law, started in Giza, south of Cairo, on Sunday amid tight security measures.
Wael el-Ebrashi, the chief editor of the independent weekly Sout el-Umma is sued by Minister of Finance Youssef Boutros Ghali for writing a series of articles in his newspaper allegedly urging the public not to heed the controversial property tax law.
Samar el-Dawi, a reporter for the same newspaper, is standing trial at the Giza Criminal Court on the same charges.
Egyptian journalists have been pushing for revoking jail terms in publishing cases.
