A police captain previously sentenced to life in absentia received a suspended one-year prison term after appearing at the Sohag Criminal Court for insulting prosecutors and raiding their office.
Captain Abdel Hamid Mohamed’s sentence was commuted after he submitted a memo of his reconciliation with the said prosecutors. Alongside Mohamed, two low-ranking policemen were sentenced to life in January and eight other policemen were sentenced to ten years in absentia.
The 12th defendant is jailed; deputy head of Saqalta police station in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag was sentenced to three years in prison.
The case dates back to October 2014, when a prosecutor’s car crashed into a truck in Saqalta town. Four people were injured in the accident.
The prosecution ordered an investigation into the chiefs of the police station for allegedly failing to take the testimonies of injured people in a traffic accident that involved the car of a prosecutor.
The prosecutors accused the policemen of raiding their office in objection to the investigation and insulting them. They also claimed the policemen confined them to the office and threatened them with firearms. The policemen’s sentence may be appealed.
