Zamalek reach Champions League semis for first time in 11 years

Zamalek reached the African Champions League semi finals for the first time in 11 years after beating Nigerian side Enyimba 1-0 in Cairo on Monday.

A second-half goal from in-form striker Basem Morsi earned the White Knights a place in the last four.

Zamalek, who only needed a draw with Enyimba to go through, qualified for the penultimate round as the second-placed team of group B with six points, three behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.

Enjoying a buoyant mood after snatching Egypt's Cup title from arch-rivals Ahly, Zamalek are seeking to win Africa's prestigious club competition for the first time since 2002.

Zamalek had the upper hand throughout the game and created a lot of scoring opportunities, but wingers Mostafa Fathi and Ayman lacked creativity and cutting edge.

After the break, the Whites piled more pressure on the Nigerian giants until Morsi scored the winner from a penalty kick after an Enyimba player handled the ball inside the area.

The game saw striker Stanley Ohawuchi make his Zamalek debut after joining in of late from Wadi Degla on loan.
