Shorbagy reaches World Championship quarters

World number one and top seed Mohamed Elshorbagy reached the quarter finals of the World Championship after beating countryman Karim Ali in straight games.

It was an easy ride for Elshorbagy who prevailed 11/3, 11/6 and 11/9 in 36 minutes.

Twenty five-year-old Elshorbagy, who will play Ali Farag in the quarters, is eyeing his first world title.

"I will do my best to snatch the world title. I have to concentrate and work hard because nothing is guaranteed in such competitions, which are always full of surprises," Elshorbagy said.

World number four Karim Abdel-Gawad came back from a game down to beat Max Lee of Hong Kong 3-1 (7/11, 11/3, 11/6 and 11/6) in 49 minutes. He will face Englishman and three-time World champion Nick Matthew, who beat Simon Rosner of Germany 3-1, in the quarter finals on Tuesday.

"This is my first quarter-final in the World Championship. Even in the juniors, my best result was reaching the round of 16. It’s nice to be in the quarters and play in front of my home audience," he said after the game.

"It’s a great thing and I just hope to keep this up and win the next round and the semi-final."
