Zamalek to play at Cairo Stadium for first time in three years

Zamalek will hold their Egyptian Premier League matches at their traditional venue in Cairo after a three-year absence, the club announced on Wednesday.

Cairo International Stadium, which used to be home to the capital s leading clubs Ahly and Zamalek, will host the White Knight s matches starting from the 3 November game against Petrojet.

“We got an approval from the interior ministry to stage our matches at the Cairo Stadium,” Zamalek s chairman Mortada Mansour said.

Zamalek last played at the 74,100-seat venue in December 2014 when they lost 2-0 to Enppi in a league match. Since then, they have mainly held their games at Cairo s Petrosport stadium.

Domestic games are still taking place behind closed doors though due to security concerns.

Ahly and Zamalek have held the majority of their matches away from their favourite venue since a football tragedy in 2012 when over 70 Ahly fans were killed after being attacked by rival Masry supporters in the coastal city of Port Said.
