Canadian skier Chris Del Bosco suffered a suspected broken pelvis in a brutal 100-foot fall in the men s ski cross.
The 35-year-old misjudged his takeoff from a jump and accidentally performed a back-flip, which left him flying through the air upside-down. He desperately kicked his legs in midair to try to reset himself but could not get upright.
Del Bosco then landed on his right hip before skidding several feet and coming to a stop, as his rivals went on to finish the run.
A Canadian official initially said he had suffered a broken pelvis, but then said more tests were needed.
Elsewhere in the heats, Terence Tchiknavorian of France was taken to the hospital with a suspected fractured shin and Austrian Christoph Wahrstoetter got a concussion, as the casualties piled up in the ski cross.
Del Bosco was born in the United States and was raised in Colorado, but he was stripped of two US national titles due to substance abuse earlier in his career.
His sister, Heather, convinced him to go into rehab after he was discovered drunk in a ditch with a broken neck at just 21.
Now, 14 years later, he is nursing another broken bone, but that is thanks to chasing his Olympic dream.
