Mohsen scores first goal in more than year as Ahly put one hand on title

Marwan Mohsen, who struggled with a year-long injury, scored his first goal in 14 months as Ahly moved one victory away from a third straight Egyptian Premier League triumph after beating Dakhleya 3-0 on Wednesday.

Coming on as a second-half substitute, the Egypt striker broke the resistance of a brave Dakhleya side after scoring a fortuitous goal five minutes past the hour mark before laying off the third for the league s top scorer Walid Azaro with four minutes remaining.

In between both goals, winger Walid Soliman netted with a delightful free-kick as Ahly put one hand on their 40th league accolade.

Mohsen only returned to action in December after recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury he suffered whilst on international duty with Egypt at the African Cup of Nations in early 2017.

His goal against Dakhleya is his first with Ahly since December 2016 when he struck in a 3-1 league victory over Masry.

Ahly, who chalked up a 14th successive win, are on top of the table with 72 points, a staggering 21 ahead of second-placed Zamalek. They will be crowned champions with six matches to spare if they overcome Enppi on 11 March.

Dour half

The only highlight of a dour first half was a goal for Ahly disallowed after forward Salah Mohsen was flagged offside.

Dakhleya threatened to take a shock lead in the 63rd minute when substitute Ahmed Mostafa ran onto a long ball to ghost behind two defenders and break clear, only to rattle the bar with a powerful shot.

They were punished two minutes later as Marwan Mohsen found the net eight minutes following his introduction, a corner ricocheting off his back and into the corner of the net.

Soliman curled a free kick over the wall and past the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 77th minute.

In-form Moroccan striker Walid Azaro completed the rout four minutes from time when he chested a flick from Marwan Mohsen and blasted an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from inside the area to take his tally to 17 goals on top of the league s scorers chart.
