China dominates feature phone shipments globally

Chinese companies accounted for 37% of feature phone shipments during the second quarter (Q2) of this year, according to a report by Counterpoint, (which provides reports on the global smartphone and tech industry with detailed analysis materials).

Notably, itel gained the largest market share among Chinese companies of 15%, followed by HMD—owner of Nokia—with a market share of 14%, while TECNO Mobile has 6%, and Symphony Mobile has 2% market share.

Feature phone shipments totalled 111m units in Q2 of 2018, an increase of 5% compared to the comparable prior year period. Counterpoint attributed this growth to the increase in feature phone sales witnessed in the Middle East and Africa regions, reaching 17% year-over-year.

According to the report, Chinese companies dominated 15% of feature phone sales in the Indian subcontinent during this Q2, including 8% to itel and 7% to HMD.

In the Rest Of Asia, Chinese companies accounted for 46% of feature phone sales, including 20% to HMD, 16% to itel, and 10% to Symphony.

In the North America, Chinese companies controlled 40% of feature phone shipments, divided between Alcatel, which gained a 22% stake and HMD with a 18% stake.

In Europe, Chinese companies acquired 37% of feature phone market during this Q2, through one company, HMD.

Things are different in South America, as Alcatel Mobile accounted for only 4% of feature phone shipments.

In the Middle East and Africa, Chinese companies controlled the market with about 60% stake of feature phone sales. Also, itel led the Chinese sales with 26%, followed by TECHNO Mobile with a market share of 19%, HMD with 14%, and X-Tigi with 1%.
