A round-table discussion was held last Thursday at the conference hall, Faculty of Information, Cairo University in the presence of an elite group of media professors, to discuss the second monitoring report for the performance of media during the transitional period in Egypt from January 1, 2012 to April 26, 2012.
The report was prepared by Dialogue Forum for Development and Human Rights on a sample of satellite channels and Egyptian newspapers as well as four Egyptian news websites which are: Copts United, Ikhwan Online, Masrawy, and Moheet.
Dr. Inas Abu Yousef, Assistant Professor at Journalism Department, Faculty of Information, Cairo University, and Director of Research and Women's Studies Center, has explained the results of the report in detail.
She said that Copts United has given great concern to the issue of social justice, and offered 30 pieces of news, articles and cartoons.
Presidential elections came at the second place of Copts United’s interests, which has been processed in the form of news and articles. A lot of political activists participate in editing news and articles of Copts United, she added.
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III has been always presented in Copts United as a main positive power, and has played a significant role in the democratic transition as well as the presidential elections, she explained.
Many Copts have participated in editing news and articles about issues like security, drafting the new constitution, and the presidential elections, she added.
Abu Yousuf said that Egyptian satellite channels’ talk shows had a very weak participation of women guests (3%) and Copts (2.3%) which was considered by the report as intended marginalize for Women and Copts.
