Church threatens to withdraw from Constituent Assembly

Holy Synod has expressed its concerns about the meetings of the Constituent Committee to draft the new Constitution, stressing that the church is worried that such it Constituent Committee may draft a constitution for the Islamists and not for all Egyptians .

Abba Benyamin, bishop of  Menoufia, has said in a press conference after the meeting of the Holy Synod that the second article of 1971 constitution shouldn't be changed unless to add that other religions may resort to their teachings and holy books concerning personal affairs and electing the religious leaders.

This comes as Islamists are trying to change the second article of the former constitution to allow them to apply the Islamic law literarily.

Church supports a civil state of Egypt based on citizenship, freedom of religion and speech, Benyamin added.
