The Socialist Popular Alliance Party issued a call on Thursday to convene a national consensus meeting where different political parties would draft an action plan for the next six months and develop a collective stance on the supplementary constitutional declaration issued by the military council in June.
The meeting would also seek to reach a consensus on who should hold legislative power until a referendum is held on the new constitution and on the formation of the Constituent Assembly.
In its statement, the party suggested that the meeting be attended by 150 figures, including President Mohamed Morsy and representatives from the revolutionary youth, various political parties, judicial bodies, popular movements, civil society organizations and the military council, as well as public figures.
Morsy's decision last week to overrule the Supreme Constitutional Court’s ruling to dissolve the People’s Assembly raised a heated political and judicial debate, with supporters of the presidential decree claiming the decision gave legitimacy to the democratic process and detractors of the decree interpreting it as a sign of disrespect to the rule of law.
Morsy has since agreed with the court’s ruling that blocked the reinstatement of the assembly.
“We need to come together and mobilize all powers to reach an agreement on a plan that would solve this transitional period’s difficult problems. We need to continue to work towards the goals of the revolution, especially in terms of replacing a dictatorial regime with a democratic one based on a constitution,” the party said.
