Some people are trying to tarnish the Muslim Brotherhood’s image spreading lies and launching smear campaigns, said Tareq Shalaby, spokesperson for the group’s supreme guide.
Shalaby made the statements in response to news published Monday by state-run newspaper Rose al-Youssef with a headline saying, “The supreme guide to Haniyeh: I wished you were prime minister for Egypt and Hamas,” referring to Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.
Shalaby said in a statement published on the Brotherhood’s website that the group “has been serving the country and citizens, wherever they are,” since it was founded until now. He said the group would never be against the country.
“We thought after the blessed revolution that everyone would lean toward the interests of Egypt and the people,” Shalaby said. “Unfortunately, it seems that some who were raised on malice against national forces, and have always incited against them, still have material and moral loyalty to the former regime remnants.”
He said fabricated news would harm relations between Egyptians and Palestinians, saying those behind them “lack the simple rules of considering Egyptian national security and Egyptian interests.”
