Prosecution jails 2 police officers accused of torturing detainee to death

The East Cairo Prosecution ordered on Thursday the detention of two Homeland Security officers accused of torturing to death a lawyer in custody, a prosecutor said.

Amgad al-Menoufi, head of the Matariya prosecution, said the officers were charged with the "torture, murder and physical assault" of a jailed lawyer while questioning him. The prosecution ordered the release of a third officer involved in the case.

The lawyer, Karim Hamdy, was arrested on Sunday alongside three others and taken to the Matariya Police Station, said the head of the syndicate of North Cairo lawyers. He was accused of arms possession and protesting against the military and the police.
