Cairo to host mideast talks on UN peacekeeping operations

Egypt is hosting two-day Middle East consultations on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Wednesday and Thursday, said the Egyptian Foreign Minister spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty announced Thursday.

The consultations are being held in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA), and representatives from the U.N. Committee on U.N. strategic operations review that was formed in October 2014 by Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Atty noted.

Egypt is currently campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council from 2016-2017.

According to the CCCPA, Egypt has participated in the U.N. peacekeeping forces with more than 30,000 peacekeepers in 24 countries nationwide since 1960.

In February, six Egyptian peacekeeping forces were killed when their vehicle transporting the soldiers overturned in Ivory Coast.
