Court orders release of rights activist Ahmed Abdullah for second time

A North Cairo court ordered late Sunday the release of the director of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms Ahmed Abdallah and four others for the second time.

This is the second time the court has ordered their release, as a prosecution appeal was accepted last week blocking the release of the five men, who are facing charges including inciting protests and attacks on security forces.

According to a judicial source, the prosecution is currently considering appealing the court’s decision.

The five men have been accused of inciting the forceful overthrow of the government and attacks on police stations for “terrorist motives,” as well as belonging to an outlawed group.

Abdallah, who has served as legal consultant for the family of murdered Italian student Giulio Regeni, was arrested from his home in New Cairo last April ahead of planned protests against the Red Sea island deal with Saudi Arabia.
