Egypt's prosecution to investigate Muqattam clashes

Egypt's chief public prosecutor, Talaat Ibrahim, ordered on Saturday investigating with political figures, parties and administrators of social networking pages, accusing them of calling for protests outside the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in Muqattam on Friday.

Clashes erupted near the Brotherhood’s headquarters between the supporters of the Islamist group and their rivals, injuring more than 200 persons on Friday afternoon.

Political forces have called for protests in front of the Brotherhood’s headquarters in what they dubbed as “Friday of Dignity” in response to assaults by the Brotherhood’s guards on journalists and women activists that occurred last week.

Clashes first erupted between the opponents of the Brotherhood and their supporters on Saturday when activists drew offensive graffiti on the walls facing Brotherhood’s headquarters.

The prosecution’s spokesperson said that the investigations will be into the complaints forwarded by citizens following the outbreak of clashes which led to injuries and destruction of private properties.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which President Mohamed Mursi hails from, demanded in a statement it issued on Saturday, holding the assailants accountable for the clashes.

The group pointed that what happened aims at “overthrowing the state institutions eliminating the Brotherhood from the political scene.”
