Hamas delegation meets with Brotherhood in Cairo

A Hamas delegation currently visiting Egypt has held several talks with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood’s Guidance Bureau, the group’s highest authority.

The delegation, which includes the Islamist group's Prime Minister Ismail Haniya and leader Khaled Meshaal, arrived in Egypt on Saturday. It will then head to the Qatari capital, Doha, to conduct the group's political leadership elections there.

The polls were originally planned to be held in Cairo but recent fierce criticism from Egyptian media and several political forces, accusing the group of involvement in the killing of 16 Egyptian border guards near Rafah in August last year, led to a change of plans.

The Palestinian delegation also held a meeting with head of Egypt's General Intelligence.

Talks tackled potential means of cooperation on the Rafah issue, as well as the Egyptian army's ongoing attempts to flood tunnels running along the Gaza-Egypt border.

The Egyptian army has so far destroyed 74 tunnels and is targeting 800 others.

At the meeting with Egypt’s intelligence service, the issues discussed included claims by Hamas that Israel, in recent attacks on Gaza, has breached the ceasefire that ended eight days of violence last November.
