Police strike against station head in Cairo's Zawya El-Hamra

Dozens of Egyptian police officers and security personnel in the Zawya El-Hamra police station in Cairo protest on Monday against the policies of the head of their station.

Protesting policemen refrained from performing their tasks at the station, decrying what they described as "ill treatment" by the head of the police station Khaled El-Mohamadi.

Policemen have staged on-and-off strikes around the country in the past months, calling for the removal of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim for the perceived failure to implement policies to protect them.

Egyptian police have been the target of hostility since the January 25 Revolution, which was partly triggered by anger at widespread police brutality during the Mubarak regime.

Police have been relatively absent from the streets since the revolution, leaving a security vacuum.
