Tamer El-Said's In the Last Days of the City won the award for best film at the Arab Critics Awards' ceremony on Sunday. Youssef Shazli, the founder and managing director of Zawya, one of the film's co-producers, accepted the award on behalf of its director. Egyptian director Mohamed Diab won the award for best director and best screen play for Clash, which he wrote with his brother Khaled. Diab was given the award by prominent film critic Youssef Sherif Rizkallah.

The Arab Cinema Centre revealed the winners of the Annual Critics Awards, which is held at the same time as the 70th Cannes Film Festival. The Best Director award went to Mohammed Diab for his film “Eshtebak” (Clash), which also got the Best Screenplay award, while the Best Actress award was awarded to Heba Ali for her role in “Akhdar Yabes” (Withered Green). As for the Best Actor award, it went to Majd Mastoura for his role in “Hedi”.

A team from the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) began packing on Monday King Tutankhamun’s treasured collection at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in a step towards transferring to its permanent location at the GEM. Tarek Tawfik, GEM supervisor-general, said that the team is now packing the golden king’s funerary bed which is made of wood gilded with golden sheets and decorated with the head of the goddess Sekhmet. Before packing the bed was subjected to scientific documentation and first aid restoration to guarantee its safe transportation.

Egypt’s museums will open their doors free-of-charge to Egyptian, Arab and foreign visitors on Thursday, May 18 as part of the Antiquities Ministry’s celebrations for International Museums Day. Elham Salah, head of the Ministry’s museums sector, said in remarks that the decision is a tradition adopted by the ministry to encourage people to visit the museums and raise archaeological awareness.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a behemoth of culture and wealth, is rebounding from more than a year of internal turmoil and financial problems. Egyptian swimmer Omar Hegazy, 26, recently became the first Egyptian to cross the 20 kilometers from Jordan’s al-Aqaba to Egypt’s Taba, challenging his own limits after having lost his leg in a tragic accident three years earlier.
