Revolutionary Socialist students detained

Nine high school students who belong to the Revolutionary Socialists movement were captured then detained from outside their school in Damietta on Tuesday.

The students were organising an exhibition on the 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes, which left around 50 people dead. The second anniversary of the clashes is next Tuesday.

Haitham Mohamedein, lawyer and Revolutionary Socialist, said three girls and six boys were dragged into the Damietta Military High School by security forces dressed in civilian clothes and school teachers. Mohamedein said four of the arrested students were physically assaulted inside the school before being sent to the Damietta Police Station.

The students were released on Tuesday night. Mohamedein said they weren’t officially charged or referred to prosecution.

“They were disciplining them,” Mohamedein added.

Mohamedein added that another Revolutionary Socialist student was arrested after security forces raided his home in Zagazig, Sharqeya on Wednesday at dawn. The student was allegedly arrested for taking part in a similar exhibition.

Mohamed Nagi, a researcher at the Student Observatory, said that a total  of six university students were arrested from their homes in Zagazig on Wednesday at dawn. They are scheduled to face prosecution on Thursday.

The exhibition is part of a campaign organised by the Revolutionary Socialists movement and the Revolutionary Front calling for the commemoration of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes. The participants are calling for retribution for those killed during the original 2011 clashes, as well as those killed in 2012 during the first anniversary of the clashes.
