Dozens of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi protested on Wednesday at Alexandria University, demanding the release of a number of detained female protesters.
Muslim Brotherhood supporters have held near daily protests since the ouster of the Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi in July.
Street protests have shrunk in size and intensity in recent weeks following a major security crackdown and a wave of arrests of group supporters.
However, since the beginning of the new academic year in September, pro-Morsi protests have taken place on many university campuses.
On Wednesday, protesters denounced the decision by prosecutors on Tuesday to extend the detention of 21 female protesters pending investigation over charges of encouraging riots during clashes in the Mediterranean city on 31 October.
Protesters chanted: "down with the military rule; girls are a red line" and: "we are not afraid of death" reported Al-Ahram's Arabic website.
Students at Cairo University and Al-Azhar University in Cairo also protested on Wednesday demanding the release of some of their colleagues detained in earlier clashes.
Al-Azhar University has been a site of intense protests in recent weeks.
