Dozens of states worldwide and international organizations have strongly denounced the Monday assassination of Egyptian Attorney-General Hisham Barakat in a car bomb attack. Turkey condemned the attack in a one-sentence statement.
“We condemn the terror attack that was conducted today in Egypt against government officials,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in statement Tuesday.
The late Attorney-General, 65, died due to severe injuries after a bomb attack targeted his convoy; three others were injured. The attack was perpetrated one day before the first anniversary of the June 30 anti-Muslim Brotherhood mass protests, after which the military overthrew Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
However, since Morsi’ was ousted July 3, 2013, relations between Cairo and MB-allied Ankara strained. Iran, which has stagnant ties with Egypt, has not commented on the attack yet. During Morsi’s one-year rule, relations between Tehran and Cairo witnessed a breakthrough after 33 years of stalled relations since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Qatar, the financial supporter of the Brotherhood, has strongly condemned the attack, saying “Qatar rejects of political violence and killing, regardless of their reasons, motives and justifications.”
Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Tunisia, Sudan, Bahrain, Libya, Yemen, and others have slammed that attack and offered their condolences for the Egyptian people; announcing their support for Egypt’s efforts against “terrorism.”
The United Nation Security Council (UNSC) condemned the “cowardly” attack, offering condolences to the Egyptian people.
“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed,” the UNSC statement read.
For its part, the EU reaffirmed its “commitment to support Egypt in its fight against terrorism;” meanwhile, the U.S. White House said “we continue to work together to quarrel a flay of terrorism.”
