Egypt’s former ambassador to Qatar Mohamed Awad has been appointed as the Egyptian consul in Mumbai, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty said in a statement Saturday.
The ministry has not appointed a successor to Awad since he was summoned in January 2014 as a protest of Qatar’s support to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
After the ouster of Morsi in July 2013 following a mass protest against his rule, Qatar, a critical ally of the Muslim Brotherhood, condemned the move and since then, relations between both sides have strained.
Although the relations saw a rift under the brokerage of late King Abdullah bin Abdelaziz of Saudi Arabia, the ties still stalled.
Cairo has also summoned its ambassador to Turkey Abdel Rahaman Salah in 2013, protesting Turkish “interference into its domestic affairs.” Both countries have also downgraded their diplomatic representation since Morsi’s outer.
