Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia agree on regularities concerning Controversial Renaissance Dam
Nile basin countries of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia have unanimously agreed on the terms to regulate the working conditions of the two French companies assigned to study the negative technical and environmental impact that the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam may have on the downstream countries, Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Atti told President Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi Saturday.
The three countries will sign contracts on technical studies with the companies soon, Abdel-Atti added. Since May 2011, Cairo has voiced its concern that the dam could reduce the country’s annual share of more than 56 billion cubic meters of Nile water. Addis Ababa, however, has claimed that the dam is necessary for its development, and will not harm downstream countries (Egypt and Sudan).
More than 1.2K underground water wells ready to irrigate 1.5 million feddans
A total of 1,284 underground water wells hitherto have been dug for irrigation purposes as part of a project that plans to cultivate 1.5 million feddanas (one feddan equals about 1.038 acres) in the desert, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Atti said in his meeting with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi Saturday.
Sisi has Iftar with ‘Egyptian Family’
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi celebrated his Iftar (breakfast) at the Presidential Palace with a group of Egyptians representing different brackets of society. He announced that the event, which is called “Egyptian Family’s Iftar,” will be held annually.
Education Minister confesses failure to stop cheating on high school exams
The Minister of Education Al-Helali al-Sherbini confessed in his speech at the Parliament that the ministry failed to stop electronic cheating during the final Thanawyia Amma (high school) exams. He also said that he failed to ban Facebook pages that leak the exams, state-owned newspaper al-Aharm reported.
