Egypt’s politics digest June 26:
Parliament will not discuss amendments to controversial protest law
 
Egypt’s Speaker of the House of Representatives Ali Abdel-Aal announced in a T.V. interview that the controversial Protest Law is not on the table for discussion and the government did not carry out any amendments to it.
 
The protest law, issued November 2013, stipulates that protests can only take place with a police permit. Accordingly, hundreds of people, including activists and students, have been jailed over breaching the law. The controversial law was harshly slammed by politicians and rights groups, locally and internationally, accusing it of being used to punish activists and curb freedom of expression.
 
Parliament has not received controversial deal of two Red Sea islands yet: Speaker
 
In same interview, Abdel-Aal said that the Parliament did not receive the documents of the controversial deal of maritime demarcation between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, per which Cairo has announced Saudi sovereignty on the two disputed islands of Tiran and Sanafir that locate in the Aqaba Gulf entrance in the Red Sea.
 
Cairo court to give ruling of case calls for social media closure in Egypt
 
Cairo’s Administrative Court will give its sentence Sunday in a legal case calling for shutting down the social media of Facebook and Twitter over allegations of “being means inciting violence,” Youm7 reported.
 
U.S. delegation visits Egypt to discuss bilateral ties
 
U.S. Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, Chairman of the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee of the United States House of Representatives has chaired an accompanying delegation in a three-day visit to Egypt. He and the delegation will meet with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and with senior government and private sector officials to discuss the long-standing partnership between the United States and Egypt, efforts to fight terrorism, and shared interests in regional stability and security, announced the U.S. embassy in Cairo in a statement Sunday.
 
Adequate ventilation in detention rooms: human rights sector of the Minister of Interior
 
The Human Rights Sector of the Egyptian Minister of Interior has sent patrols to check the conditions of the detention cells and rooms amid the high temperature. The visit outcomes showed that there is adequate ventilation in the rooms, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior Saturday.
