A Cairo criminal court on Wednesday quashed an earlier decision to release two senior leaders of the Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya detained over charges of belonging to a banned group after it accepted prosecution appeal.
The two group leaders, Safwat Abdel-Ghany and Alaa Abu El-Nasr, have been in detention since July 2014 over charges including joining the now-banned pro-Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy.
The court ordered their release two days ago but accepted on Wednesday a prosecution appeal against the release.
This is the second time a court release for the two has been reversed on prosection appeal.
In April, court ordered their release but the decision was later reversed also on appeal by prosecutors.
Al-Gammaa Al-Islamiya renounced the use of violence against the government in the 1990's and entered mainstream politics by forming a political party following the 2011 revolution.
The group played a key role in the pro-Mohamed Morsi National Alliance to Support Legitimacy in 2013-2014.
The alliance was banned in October 2014 and many of its leading figures have since been arrested on charges of inciting violence.
Since Morsi's ousting n 2013 and the dispersal of two major Cairo protest camps by Egyptian security forces in August 2013, thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members and loyalists have been arrested and tried over terrorism-related charges
Over the past few months, several leading Morsi supporters have been acquitted by Egyptian courts, including former Morsi manpower minister Khaled El-Azhary.
