A child was killed and another was seriously injured on Saturday after a football rigged with an explosive device detonated in an apartment in Cairo’s Manshiyat Nasser, Egypt’s interior ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said the improvised explosive device (IED) detonated as the two children were playing with the ball, which they found in a dumpster.
This is the first suspected terrorist incident to take place in the capital since an explosion on Cairo’s Gesr El-Suez Road killed one civilian in October.
Five men suspected of carrying out the Gesr El-Suez IED attack were arrested shortly after the incident.
Attacks against Egyptian security forces have become common in recent years, though they are rare outside of North Sinai, where Egypt's army and police are battling an entrenched Islamist insurgency.
