Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry took part on Tuesday, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in the 6th virtual meeting of the AU Bureau of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government since the outbreak of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.
The meeting assessed the situation on the continent in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of the Africa Joint Continental Strategy for COVID-19, according to a tweet by Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez.
During the meeting Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director, Dr John Nkengasong provided an update on the successes and challenges of the continent s efforts against the pandemic.
According to Africa CDC on 6 October, the 55 African Union member states have reported 1,518,662 COVID-19 cases including 36,921 deaths and 1,256,284 full recoveries.
