Egypt court convicts 14 in absentia to life for murder, attempted murder
Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Saturday 14 defendants in absentia to life in prison for illegal assembly, attempted murder, murder of policemen and illegal possession of weapons. Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Saturday 14 defendants in absentia to life in prison for illegal assembly, attempted murder, murder of policemen and illegal possession of weapons. 
 
The case stems back to violent attacks by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi against security forces in Cairo in the summer of 2013.  
 
Life in prison sentences carry up to 25 years in jail, according to the Egyptian penal code.
 
The court also sentenced a minor in the case in absentia to three years in (juvenile) prison and three-year probation.
 
The court imposed on the convicted fines amounting to LE100,000.
 
Verdicts are subject to changes if defendants stand trial.
