Constitution Party secretary dies during debate at Cairo HQ

A secretary at the Constitution Party has died of a heart attack during a heated debate over the selection of the party's representatives in northern Giza.

Abdel-Baki Shaarawi died on Tuesday and was buried on Wednesday.

Shaarawi was opposed to appointing party secretaries and had called for them to be elected, which was one of the demands of around 200 party members who had been protesting since early January.

On Monday, the protesters ended a week-long sit-in at the party's headquarters when ElBaradei promised to meet them and reach a consensus.

In addition, the protesters demanded the dismissal of party secretary-general, Emad Abu-Ghazi, organisational secretary, Makram Ebeid, and spokesperson Waleed El-Sheikh.

They also called for the dissolution of the steering committee and for the party organisation to be restructured.

ElBaradei and party members extended their condolences to Shaarawi's family in a statement on Wednesday.

The conference hall at the party's headquarters will now be called Martyr Shaarawi Hall, the statement added.

Shaarawi was also a member of the party's Central Resource Development Committee.

Before joining the Constitution Party he took part in the January 25 Revolution and established the Tanmenya association for societal development in 6 October City.
